CAPM Certification: To Renew or Not to Renew

August 20th, 2008 · No Comments

The (CAPM) certification credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI) does not require ongoing education to earn PDUs, but it does not last forever.  Reviewing the renewal requirements, however, one would think that any candidate who is working in the project management field should strongly consider going for the PMP certification, and renew the CAPM certification as a second resort.

CAPM Credential Renewal
Once an individual successfully passes the CAPM examination, he or she is certified up to 5 years.  Before the end of the 5 year period arrives, an individual may choose to renew his or her CAMP credential or if eligible, he or she may opt to apply for the PMP or Project Management Professional credential.

Perks of CAPM Credential Renewal
Credential renewal boosts the performance and professional of an individual by assuring his or her employers, project teams, colleagues and peers that he or she is well-versed and highly equipped with skills and abilities pertaining to current project management terminology and processes.  Also, the renewal process is easier than letting the credential expire, in which case the candidate would need to re-apply as a new applicant.

Overview of CAPM Credential Renewal Process
A person who is aspiring for a CAPM credential renewal should first of all submit a completed application for CAPM credential renewal.  One must reiterate his or her adherence to the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct as well as PMI Certification Application as part of the application process.  A credential renewal fee must also be paid and another CAPM examination must be taken.  If the individual passes the CAPM examination, he or she can receive a new certificate with restructured certification cycle dates.

Determining the CAPM Certification Cycle
One’s active cycle of certification begins the day that he or she passed the examination and ends five full calendar years after.  One must apply for credential renewal and take the examination during the last year of his or her cycle of certification.

For individuals who are interested in renewing their CAPM credentials or for those who simply want to know more about the different ways to determine the certification cycle, they can visit http://www.pmi.org/PDF/pdc_capmhandbook.pdf

Renew, or Go for the PMP Certification
Since the PMP certification is of greater value to employers, as it shows greater experience and a higher level of qualifications, I would encourage anyone to pursue PMP certification in lieu of CAPM certification renewal.  However, if that is not a good option for anyone, renewal of the CAPM certification is certainly a good backup option for anyone who intends to continue in the project management profession.
