PRINCE2 - PRojects IN Controlled Environments - is a major worldwide project management framework, or methodology. It takes a different approach than the PMI™s PMBOK, but the goal of both is to improve project performance. While PMBOK is generally well-accepted worldwide, it is by far the leading approach in North America. PRINCE2 on the other hand is strongest in the United Kingdom, with a strong presence in Europe, Australia, and other typically English-speaking countries outside North America. But both are expanding there reach on a constant basis as the world gradually "projectizes."
PRINCE2 Background and Resources
To learn some more info about PRINCE2, check the following 4 resources:
Many think that a strong, well-rounded project manager should earn both the PRINCE2 and PMP certifications. Check the bogs and forums. It may be that many managers in certain parts of the world would look favorably on individuals that possess both. Many cite the observation that PRINCE2 is a process driven method for the management of projects, while the PMBOK consists of the tools and techniques of project management - and they believe that the combination of the two is very powerful. In any case, it would seem wise for professional project managers to at least be familiar with both.
Max Wideman on PRINCE2 vs PMBOK
Max Wideman is one of the pioneers of professional project management, and one of the early developers of the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) of the Project Management Institute (PMI). For Max Wideman’s viewpoint on PRINCE2 vs PMBOK, see "Comparing PRINCE2 with PMBOK®" by R. Max Wideman.
AIPM on PRINCE2 vs PMBOK
Project management certifications are offered by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) for both individuals and organizations. In addition, Australia sits at somewhat of a crossroads between PRINCE2 and the PMBOK, since both are well represented in that country. So, the AIPM is in a unique position to present a viewpoint on the PRINCE2 vs PMBOK subject, so for another thought-provoking viewpoint and in depth comparison of PRINCE2 and the PMBOK, see "A Comparison of PRINCE2 Against PMBOK" published on the AIPM web site.
PRINCE2 for PMPs
Another nice overview of PRINCE2 vs PMP from the perspective of a PMP is entitled "How PRINCE2 Can Complement PMBOK and Your PMP", by Jay M. Siegelaub of the PMI Westchester, New York Chapter. Mr. Siegelaub provides insight on how the perspective of PRINCE2 can help in the career of a PMP certified project manager.
