Contact Hours in Project Management Are “Perpetual”

July 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I recently saw a forum post where a [tag]PMP[/tag] hopeful was wondering if contact hours he had earned through a [tag]PM training[/tag] course are ‘perpetual’.  He wondered if they would “last forever”.

After a little research, I verified that yes, his training in project management would not expire, and he could use it to help meet his [tag]PM educational requirements[/tag] on his [tag]PMP application[/tag].  The problem is, “Why would he wait?”

I do not know what his plans were, exactly, but he was thinking enough about earning a PMP that he was researching on the web and participating in forums.  I suggested that it is always good to act on information that you have sooner rather than later.  For example, if you intend to go for your PMP, it would be a good idea to act on that as soon as possible, and create your own relatively short timetable.  The information will be fresher for you, personally, and also, the information presented in the training you took will be the most relevant.

There is another benefit in that you want it now!  When we desire something, if we do not act on it, it subsides in our mind – and we are just left with a fleeting thought.  However, if you act, you could have a PMP with some effort in a relatively short period of time.  It would be behind you, and you would be free to look for new goals, with the confidence that you achieved this one!

Another point is that PMI training is always advancing, and new editions of the PMBOK are evolving.  Really, nothing stays the same!  My suggestion to anyone is to act on it, if you want to do it, while the desire is fresh and current, and before your current knowledge becomes outdated in the industry.
