Many PMs would benefit by earning another certification because of their industry or functional affiliation. For example, it may be career enhancing for a PM in the pharmaceutical or construction industry to earn another certification, to complement the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, directly related to their industry.  Similarly, some PMPs might specialize in certain functional areas, like Human Resouces, Supply Chain Management, or financial projects. There are often certifications related to those, and you can earn PDUs to maintain your PMP certification while preparing for some of these other certifications. Here are a couple of examples:
- Much, if not most, ITIL training is applicable for PDUs.Â
- Much, if not most, Six Sigma training is applicable to PDUs.
PMPs can look at the CCR handbook and see that as long as you can reasonably link the training specifically to the PMI processes and/or knowledge areas, you can legitimately earn the PDUs. You should be able to do this without much trouble for most ITIL or Six Sigma training, for example. Here are the PM processes and knowledge areas from the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK):

Note that the PMI rules state that you can earn 1 PDU for each course hour for courses with relevant PM content.
