There has been much written on whtehr or not any certification is of value. Personally, I think there is definite value, and here are a few of my reasons.

1. [tag]PMP[/tag] vs other [tag]PM certification[/tag] - It really does not matter. The important thing is that there is exposure to a complete framework, or body of knowledge, for the subject of project management.
2. Personal benefits - Certification has become a ‘gatekeeper’ for many. But let’s be thankful that we have the opportunity to take control and make changes, and this is one of the prices of admission. If you are happy where you are, you may not need it. But for career changers - in an age of change - it is very helpful.
3. Broader, or systematic benefits - I read an article a short time ago that talked about how ‘electrification’ was a process that changed the way things were done, and everybody needed to buy into it. It compared that to ‘projectization’ today. Indeed, I think the [tag]PMI[/tag] and other certifying organizations are contributing to that ‘[tag]projectization[/tag]’ process in the world today. It effects the competitiveness of organizations in today’s highly competitive global economy. I think this is a notable and necessary contribution.

In summary, I think the PMP or any other [tag]Project Management certification[/tag] is as very good thing. It provides a solid, well-thought out background. However, it is sometimes misused when people mistakenly look at it as a kind of cookbook process, and common sense and maturity of judgment are not used. Within the profession, we need to make sure we understand that the PM process is not ‘cookbook’, but rather is the application of a framework in combination with maturity and judgment.
