Collaboration: Big Projects Meet Small Projects

October 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

There is a need for a more fluid approach to project management.  As human beings, we have developed as social beings that want to work with a bigger picture and in less compartmentalized situations.  That may not be true for all people, but I would contend that it is true for most.

So, how does that play into the world of [tag]professional project management[/tag]?  I am not sure, but am exploring that question.  What I think is needed is something that allows people to interact as we did in the old days, when we were working together on things, in small shops, on farms, on [tag]SMALL PROJECTS[/tag].

Small [tag]construction projects[/tag] are great to observe; if you sit and watch a well run project, you see that there is an overall plan, but on site there is a lot of constant and ad hoc interaction among the workers.

Contrast that with much larger projects, whether in the construction or IT or other space, and you will find that there are tiers of people working in a more compartmentalized fashion, not necessarily with knowledge of what others are doing, and more importantly, with no “project” of their own.  They are often “task masters”.

Modern information technology - [tag]online project management[/tag] - can add one missing element:  [tag]project collaboration[/tag].  Yes, I think the tools can be an enabler of a better way of doing things.  See “Why do Most Project Management Tools Lack Collaboration?” for a much lengthier and in depth look at what is missing and what is now possible.  I think it will be a cultural change to get that mindset to penetrate in organizations, but the payoff is great.  We can leverage the best of varous [tag]project management methodologies[tag] to create the best results for projects by enabling poeple to work as they always have on small projects.
