Daptiv, formerly eProject, has changed its name effective November 12, 2007, reflecting its desire to cast a wider net within the enterprise. The name eProject reflected a strict project management focus, whereas Daptiv - with connotations of fast, adaptive, dynamic, modern, futuristic - leaves behind that more singular focus. In fact, CEO Jeff Pancottine has reported that the new branding reflects the on-demand, flexible style and wide range of uses for the software beyond the scope of traditional Project Portfolio Management (PPM).  The capabilities of web services surely figured into this marketing move.
The company has been a leader - together with big names in the field like CRM provider salesforce.com - in the Software as a Service space. In that realm, providers do not sell software, but rather sell the service of using the application via internet access.  Consumers of the service access their own “instance†of the application over the web. Web services architecture expands the possibilities for broadening the use of software, because of efficient interoperability with other systems and data. Â
A look at Daptiv’s web site reveals that they are now defining its offering as “on-demand collaborative business softwareâ€, further stating that it “enables companies of all sizes to transform their mid-office business operations across projects, departments and teams.â€Â It also branches into the business intelligence space. In any case, it also states 3 additional objectives that the offering fulfills:
- Increase productivity across organizational roles
- Reduce the complexity of managing diverse projects and teams
- Gain maximum visibility into your mid-office operations
What does this say about the project management marketplace? Â On one hand it says that it is an excellent marketplace, as it propelled this successful company to leadership in the field, so it was a great place to get a market foothold. Â But it also has its limitations, but is adjacent to many company operational areas. Â With a foot in the door to project operations, why not expand into other parts of operations?
