I recently read an excellent article on allpm.com about Change Management.  The article handled the topic pretty comprehensively – from a project management point of view. However, the article focused on getting people ready for change resulting from a project. I think that a great deal of [tag]change management[/tag] must occur before a it is even decided to do the project!
I think some critical aspects of change management include:
Â
1. Pointing out the possible ramifications of certain changes - before action, or a project implementing the change, is initiated.
2. Developing and evaluating various courses of action.
3. Analyzing risks of doing or not doing a project.
Â
I know that these are points that relate a lot to [tag]project portfolio management[/tag] and [tag]program management[/tag], not strictly ‘project management’. I think it is very important for a project managemer to be fully aware of the context within wihc he/she is working.  That means understanding why a project is being done, what the value of the project is to the company, where the project fits into the company strategy, how the project relates to other current or planned projects, and more.
Being a great project manager is about demonstrating leadership in execution, but also about demonstrating leadership by understanding the big picture.
