Most of the focus of individuals in the project management profession is on improving their own ability and that of others to execute well on projects. Typically, we are able to measure our progress in that regard by measuring performance and results on these projects. There is a process called "projectization" that refers to the general capability of people and organizations at large to manage projects effectively and predictably. Let’s take a look at how this is done at an organizational level.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) has a standard body of knowledge called OPM III. This stands for Organizational Project Management Maturity Model. This body of knowledge goes beyond the pinlock which is geared toward managing individual projects to having a framework for organizational capabilities in the area of project management. OPM III is all about looking at project management at an organizational level and looking at the big picture, where projects are driven by strategy. Part of the OPM model is about how to measure the effectiveness within the organization of doing this. Finally, OPM III also offers a means by which organizations can develop and adopt policies and procedures to optimize its performance on the types of projects that it executes.
Organizational project management is based on the foundation of knowledge, continuous assessment, and continuous improvement. It is not all that different from what we already do on individual projects. However it is taken to the organizational level it is looked at in this macro way.
