The world first fell in love with the radio during the early 1900s when it was still referred to as ‘wireless telegraphy’. It was a wonder to behold – a tool capable of producing a signal or disembodied voice speaking from far away. By the time technology took over, the world was hooked and radio began its reign, managing to keep itself competitive in spite of the appearance of other types of media.

Good and bad signals

The radio functions as a means with which electromagnetic waves are transmitted. Unlike other methods of communication, there is no need to use a transport medium just to use the radio. By merely changing certain sound wave properties, information gets passed from the source to the recipient.

The role of radio

It is not the earliest form of communication and entertainment, but it definitely revolutionized many aspects of people’s lives. Radio became the means that brought people together, becoming the town crier that families and friends flocked to.

The technology behind it has also changed the way people thought, how they worked and lived. Although it is often viewed as a simple, two-way communicating device, more and more people discover that it can become interactive and is an excellent means with which to manage groups and complete projects.

Radio evolves

From the rough, awkward looking machine presented by Guglielmo Marconi, radio has undergone a series of changes over the years. It was first a means with which to exchange telegraphic images and gradually evolved to appear in other forms, such as mobile communications devices and wireless networks. Most recently, radio has emerged to take on a digital form.

Radio and Project Communications

Radio today has reached the internet, and satellite has further extended the reach, but also fragmented the markets for radio. Like television, markets can be well-defined, which opens possibilities for niche communications to specific demographic groups. It also opens possibilities for creating radio communications, but then positing the recordings to the web for later review. Thus both time and space are eclipsed.
