Someone asked that question yesterday. It is a great question, and has a bit of a mixed answer. Six Sigma is a discipline which pertains to continuous improvement of quality. It deals with processes, as opposed to projects. It is built on metrics – hence the ‘6 sigma’ name, which corresponds to a statistical interval representing a very high degree of confidence. With Six Sigma, the effort to improve quality, and to improve the processes, does not necessarily ever end. It just keeps going – refining, improving, re-optimizing, and refocusing on new metrics… Project Management, on the other hand, deals with projects, not processes. The PMBOK – Project Management Body of Knowledge – defines a project as having a well defined beginning and end. This is in sharp contrast to the Six Sigma mantra of constant improvement. The PMBOK, however, in describing a common framework for managing projects, lays out ‘project management process groups’ for managing projects. Thus, it lays out that managing a project is actually a well-defined process, and then it describes the framework for the process of managing a project. This, I think, is where Six Sigma and the PMBOK meet. While projects are unique and do not repeat, the process of managing a project is, to a substantial degree, a repeatable process. Thus, it would stand to reason that the project management process could be improved on a continuous basis. This makes sense when we think of the fact that, as project managers, we are always trying to apply our lessons learned from prior projects, combined with any new knowledge we gain in the field of project management, to improve upon project performance from project to project. This is the objective of Project Management Centers of Excellence, or Project Management Offices, within larger organizations. Improving project performance has become a continuous improvement process. Six Sigma and project management, in this way, complement each other very well.
