In these tough economic times, it will be quite a challenge for so many of us to make it through the year with a strong financial performance. I have been thinking about what some of the keys are to ensuring that 2009 is a solid year. The best conclusion I have is that the customer is king. Here are my thoughts.
In business, the customer truly is king. The customer is the one that must be satisfied and is the one that simply decides to part with his or her money for the good services that a business offers. A business lives or dies based upon its ability to serve its customers. Serving customers means that it provides something that customers want, are willing to pay for, and that the product or service is delivered satisfactorily.
It is no different in project management — we are here to satisfy our customers. Oftentimes we are handed a project and we proceed to execute. In times like these, there is a lot of worry, perhaps, on our own parts, but also on the part of the team members and our stakeholders as to the future and as to our continued employability during this difficult period. The problem with this worry is that it tends to be inwardly focused. The solution is to actually take the attention off ourselves and focus on the needs of others.
That focus needs to be on our customers. In many organizations, customer is synonymous with stakeholder. We need to be clearer than ever as to the reason why our projects exist. We also need to be more open and externally focused than ever as to changes that can affect the reasons why our projects exist.
So, in moving forward this year, 2009, for me it is most important to be customer focused. It is most important to be more thoroughly engaged with customers than ever to make sure they are getting what they need, and to make sure that we help them in the face of changing conditions; to adapt and modify the course as necessary. These are some of the top services that we can provide to our customers in 2009.
