If you are at all like me, achieving work/life balance is a challenge. As I think about it, there are a few key things that present the greatest obstacles – and thus provide the starting point for managing the situation.
Three broad areas stick out for me. There are:
- Electronic devices
- Physical condition
- Life stresses
Here is how I am coping with these.
- Whenever I get a chance to get off somewhere WITHOUT an electronic device, I take it. For example, often in the car I make phone calls or listen to podcasts on my iPhone. At times, I find that this ‘multi-taking’ is actually a stress reliever. But at other times I find that it represents information and task overload. At those points I try to toss it aside for a while and let my thoughts drift to other things.
- I notice a profound difference in how I feel when I get some regular exercise, and I tend to need a lot. I am usually get 2-3 good workouts a week, plus one competitive ‘game session’, which is usually playing tennis. When I miss all or most of that – like last week – I try to make up for it with some extra walking, stretching, and pushups and return to the routine as soon as possible.
- With aging or ill parents, growing children, and demanding business challenges, I find that there is no magic. The reality is that these problems are not particularly ‘solvable’. In most cases, they need more to be managed than solved, and recognizing and accepting that alone is a good way to cope. Getting away and reading, or working on an engrossing separate project, is another way to cope. But the key for me is to stay in the fight, keep coping, and face the problems head on. Anything less is hiding, but I also allow myself a break.
I also have more recently benefitted by realizing that achieving work/life balance does not mean maintaining a steady state alll of the time. There are periods which seem out of balance one way or another for a time, but they may very well become out of balance in another way at another time. For me, I simply re-balance frequently – usually at lease once every few months, to deal with that. In some ways, I re-balance every week, or even a couple of days!
I hope this provides some insight. There are tools and techniques aplenty, and after a while, I think most of us know what they are. It’s a matter of finding our own way and recoginizing that it is our own circumstance to handle. For me, the more responsibility I take, the more clarity I seem to get, and that itself manages my stress.
