As a project manager, you are – or should be – a leader. Assessing your own performance as a leader is an excellent practice, but doing so realistically is a challenge. Here are some of the challenges:
- Seeing yourself as others see you.
- Being overly critical of yourself.Â
- Understanding your beliefs.
- Setting reasonable standards for yourself.
- Attempting to master things beyond your reasonable control.
One way to handle all of this is to think like a project manager in assessing yourself. This can help to remove some of the emotion and personal attachment from the effort. For example, you can:
- Ask others for an honest performance assessment of yourself, and pointed ask for feedback about specific aspects of your performance, maybe about a very specific situation you are handling.
- Take a step back and look at how you ‘talk to yourself’. Are you hard or easy on yourself? Break down ‘your internal conversation’ and look at some specific recurring or common issues and give some thought aoubt what is going on in your head.
- Document your beliefs. What is most important to you? What is least important? To what extent are you really familiar with your deep seated beliefs? Recurring stresses can give you a hint.
- What job performance standards are you setting for yourself? Are you stretching far enough? Are you setting yourself up for success?
- What do you need to know? What can you reasonably be expected to know? Is this realistic, and within your own control?
Balanced leaders provide guidance to others. You will be a better leader to the degree that you know yourself, handle yourself well, and manage your own self. If you treat yourself with greater care and respect, you will enhance your ability to thrive, and to lead.
