Leaders Need To Be Human!

We as Project Managers are often in situations that put us in , directly of individuals.  In such roles, there is sometimes a tendency to ‘detach’ ones self from the collegiality that might exist on – and be beneficial to – the team.  That can become particularly true when there are other differences between us and the team, such as age differences, experience gaps, educational variances, and other things.

We need to be aware of any tendency to ‘detach’ from the team.  On one hand, in a leadership role, we should not be looking to simply ‘gain acceptance form the gang’.  However, it is a whole other thing to be perceived by everyone as aloof, to the point of lacking ‘human characteristics’!

When we are too detached, people can often look at us as snooty, arrogant; disinterested, phony, or other undesirable characteristics.  Part of being ‘professional’ is also being ‘real’, and the only way to do that is to be less aloof and detached.  For example, it is good to let down your guard form time to time and show others you are human.  Share something that is happening in your life outside of work.  People will definitely see the human side of you, and will respond to you more naturally and honestly.

As a leader, it is good to ‘know’ the members on your team.  You can surely better lead those you know than those you don’t!  Conversely, it is much easier to follow someone who you know, than to follow someone you don’t!  As project managers, we want to be that someone that our team knows, and that they feel comfortable following.  Be yourself, and trust that you are a leader.  You do not need to pretend that you are something you are not.  This will help you be more open and create a stronger team, and further develop your .
