It’s human nature to stay with what is familiar, even when we know that a big change is needed.  The prospect of venturing into the unknown comes with fear and risk.  Tough times, like that presented by our current economic climate, might make changing necessary.  Let’s have a look at some aspects of what is needed:  leadership and change.

We can view this as a leadership development opportunity.  After all, we will be making choices absent the reassuring guidance of past experience, and this is often what a leader is called upon to do.  We have the opportunity to “build leadership muscle” where there previously was none.

It’s so easy to imagine the downside of significant change, yet we owe it to ourselves to assess the hazards of maintaining things as they are. Often, we naturally trick ourselves into thinking that if we do nothing, things will stay the same.  However, reality is quite different than this!  We often need to make changes just to maintain viability.

With this in mind, we need to constantly weigh the risks of a change, as well as the risks of not making a change.  Either way, it can be unsettling, but necessary, as the status quo may not be an option.  By facing this reality and finding the courage to put it into practice, we can grow as leaders discover in ourselves the leader’s wisdom and courage.
