Project Leadership and The Project Team Pact

June 17th, 2009 · 9 Comments

When we set-up a project team for a new project or if we take over an existing project, we have an opportunity and a responsiblity to create new norms and a new atmosphere in which project team members can flourish. It is important that we set-up this system with great care and that there is something in it for everyone and that it all points toward . Let’s look at one important element of this project team pact.

Project Team Pact

The key to an effective project team pact is as follows:

  1. Provide a road map for all team members to achieve project goals.
  2. Promise to support all team members in achieving their respective goals as part of the team with the resources, guidance, connections, and support necessary.
  3. Execute on these promises with total integrity.

A project team pact is a means by which we can create trust on the team, create a team spirit, and create an atmosphere of independent and interdependent work for project goals. One additional thing that is very helpful is to take it one level higher and work closely with project team members in getting to know their own personal preferences, goals, and aspirations. Find ways to tie those somehow to project goals and project activities so that you are additionally helping these team members to achieve their personal career goals.

Communication, interrelationships, and interdependence are, in the end, what really makes a team tick. It creates that intangible personal element that enables any other tool and technique to become relevant. It enables project and program success and builds rapport and relationships for the long term.
