In the realm of project management certification, there is a transition occurring in the exam for the project management professional (PMP) certification exam. On January 1, 2009, the 4th edition of the PMBOK was officially published. Many people wonder, especially at this point in time, whether they should take the 3rd edition exam or wait to take the 4th edition exam.
The dates of changeover to the new exams are as follows:
- The PMP exam will be based upon the 3rd editon of the PMBOK through June 30th 2009. On July 1, 2009, the 4th edition-based exam will begin.
- The CAPM exam will be based upon the 3rd edition of the PMBOK through July 31st 2009. On August 1, 2009, the 4th edition-based exam will begin.
What do those dates mean? And what should a candidate do? Many are asking.
One thing to carefully weigh is the amount of time that you have to study for the exam. You need to be sure that you can be ready for the exam in time if you are going to take the 3rd edition exam. As of this writing, there are approximately three months left before the changeover.
Another big consideration for all perspective PMPs or CAPMs is that the 4th edition exam will be brand new. I equate this to many new products, for example, a new software product often has some bugs in the beginning. There is a limited amount of knowledge and a limited amount of experience about the new software, and therefore there is a sort of breaking-in period where those bugs are worked out. With certification exams, it is no different. Consider the following:
1. There is no experience with people taking the actual exam. Therefore, the exact questions need to be worked out.
2. There has been little training developed for the 4th edition, while most project management certification organizations are developing the updated content for the 4th edition, that content will also lead to a breaking-in period.
3. Exam stimulations, one of the most important certification exam preparation tool will not be quite up to par for months to come.
For those who have the time to focus on the exam, taking the 3rd edition exam prior to July 1 for PMPs and prior to August 1 for CAPMs would seem to be a good idea. There is absolutely nothing lost in terms of knowledge as the differences are not major. In addition, due to the continuing education requirements for the PMP, any new PMP who has taken the 3rd edition exam can certainly take study courses on the 4th edition exam afterwards and earn professional development units (PDUs).
It is good to go with the tried and true if you can. So take the 3rd edition exam if you have time and don’t fret about missing anything in the new edition.
