Sustainability and the Living Roof

January 7th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Sustainability is a hot topic today. Many potential projects may have the appearance of socially responsible but in some cases are not sustainable. in and of itself is a key aspect of social responsibility. The growing presence of living roof project is a good example of sustainability in action.

A living roof is an extensive set of plantings that are placed on a rooftop of a building. While it is easy to imagine that living roof can provide beauty, a potential retreat, and healthy effects for the atmosphere. It’s maybe less clear how such projects are sustainable, however, while the above stated benefits are real and represents real social responsibility, the idea that a living roof can provide excellent insulation in both summer and winter months that result in the savings of energy costs for both heating and cooling is a great example of sustainability.

Sustainability is a key metric for measuring project success. As project managers, we need to be responsible for bringing up sustainability as an issue. Sustainability needs to be considered as an important social responsibility issue alongside many others.
