There is no better dose of reality, than the power of pushback. It occurs in every walk of life and, utilized properly, can be our friend in the project management process. It comes in most handy when dealing with uncertainty. It also keeps us honest about our prospects.
What I mean by pushback is resistance. This could be resistance to our ideas on the part of project team members or stakeholders. It could be resistance on our part to ideas of stakeholders or project team members. In any case, what it spells is lively debate about the issues of today. Pushback brings forward different perspectives. It allows us to review our own ideas and see things from other points of view. While pushback can often be painful and hard work, whether initiated by us or initiated by others, the cost is almost always worth it, as results tend to better and all stakeholders tend to be more satisfied.
Being cognizant of the benefits of pushback should enable us to discern when it is best to provide pushback to others. We need to allow ourselves to feel free, to challenge the opinions of others, to challenge actions, to question courses of action, and to resist those things that we believe are wrong. Using careful judgment on this reflects our experience, our attitude, and our ethics.
