Time Management and Prioritization

October 20th, 2008 · 3 Comments

go hand in hand. It is very difficult to think of one without the other. Let’s think about them separately for a moment and then see where they really fit together.

Let’s get back to the basics
Many of us -and I have been guilty of this myself - have worked  a lot at time management as a way to get more done in less time. We feel that if we use our day timers extremely effectively, have our tasks down, follow our list, stick to the times, and record our continuing progress, we will get a lot more done in the time allotted. Well, this is true and effective to a point. We can complete more in less time with focus, discipline, and energy. However there are limitations to how far we can go with this!  Efficiency is not everything!

Priority management gets a lot of more to the point. Priority management gets us into the mode of more thinking, and less doing. This is where we can exercise our leadership skills, even simply dealing with our own schedule. If we have many, many things to do, we need to be very clear on not only what the most important is, but also what our primary goals are.  We must ask ourselves if any or all of our activities contribute to the accomplishment of our primary goals.  First so it’s not so much getting things done, but getting the right things done. May be we don’t get every thing done but at the end it really won’t matter much.

Put Time Management and Prioritzation Together
Putting time management and prioritization - where prioritization is driven by primary goals and overall objectives -together is the optimal way to manage time. Well, this is quite basic, but sometimes it takes reminding to keep us on track. It is good to sit back sometimes and think for a moment about how we are doing things…

I love that chart, John, and strive to keep myself in the second box. Although it is easy to allow colleagues to put me in box three and for me to put myself in box four, I find that writing lists of the important tasks I need to get done works wonders in my motivation department.

Yes, there are are only so many hours in a day. That’s the “traditional” day timer type chart. Most of the time, there is plenty of time to do the most important things!
