In the hassle and buzzle of day to day work life, of course mixed with a busy personal life, we need to remember that our team members also have their own personal goals, aspirations and challenges. There are many things we can do related to this but the first step is always awareness. Here are a few ideas on how to deal with this:
1. Get to know each person.
It is important to take a little time now and then to talk casually with each individual, on your immediate team, and simply get to know them. Being sensitive to issues like something might be happening to a family member, the person has an upcoming trip, the person like baseball, the person values being a coach to their daughter and more are very important things to know. They get at heart of who the person is and can temper your own attitudes on a day to day basis in working with them.
2. Get to know your team member’s career goals.
One thing that will help you understand and what capabilities a person has as well as what internal motivation they have is to understand their career goals if you can understand their career goals and can try to provide training and work assignments that help them to reach those goals you will have a highly motivated team member.
3. Encourage relationships among team members.
On your team, depending on the size and sophistication, you will likely experience some level of competitiveness but also some level of cooperativeness. You as team leader and project manager can set the tone for an environment where information is shared and mutual respect rules all relationships. Every bit of time that you can invest in promoting the best relationship possible among team members is well worth it.
Our teams consist of people and we need to keep that fact front and center. People are not machines and are not just cogs in the wheel of an organization chart of list of resources. They have human emotions that are involved with their lives on the job and off the job and in their relationships with others. Awareness of this fact is the first step to ensure optimal performance and satisfaction by every team member involved.
